Fall 2010 Staff Picks

What's currently at the top of our gift list? Here are just some of our favorites, handpicked by the Pomegranate staff . . .

Eyvind Earle: Landscapes 2011 Wall Calendar (H407). The vibrant colors and rich tones really are a nice addition to my office wall. I look forward to all 12 luminescent images. —Josh, sales

I carry it in my purse, I write my grocery list in it.  I love it, it's handy. I look at it when I need to smile or write down a memory I want to cherish. It's SC0703: Emperor Penguin Chick Pocket Journal, he's SO cute! —Monica, production

I love so many of our bookmarks, like the Albert Einstein “Imagination is more important than knowledge” Bookmark (9162) or The Blues by Romare Bearden Bookmark (9773). I'm an avid reader and I like to give books as gifts to friends sometimes. I always insert a bookmark that either relates to the book in some way or is just a pretty addition to the gift. —Ronni, design

Edward Gorey's Dracula Mouse Pad (P149). When my mouse begins its daily spin across the great Gothic wings of the Count, it's better than three cups of espresso! There's delicate Lucy Westenra, so beautiful and so doomed, with Dracula himself acting as her dread protector—with a delightfully shivering spine I scoot my mouse to and fro. —Sam, editorial

The New York Times Book Lover’s Journal (AA308). I buy these as gifts for my friends who are avid readers and, like myself, cannot recall titles or authors. It is a wonderful way to keep track of who and what you have read and if you liked them. There is a place for listing books or authors that friends have recommended. The gals love ’em . . . and it helps those of us with a faulty memory! —Delores, customer service

I bought our Magnolia and Quince Thank You Notes (0282) to send out with our wedding picture a month after I got married. I loved the image . . . a perfect what to say Thank You to our guests! I also used the Dard Hunter Thank You notes (0285) prior to that for my wedding shower. Pomegranate’s boxed Thank You notes are a perfect way to send your appreciation to someone . . . a great blend of beautiful art! —Tina, customer service

Carl Larsson Pocket Address Book (AA252). I love the vibrant colors, because they are easy to see in my purse, and the elastic band, which is neatly bound into the back cover, allows me to keep postage stamps, notes, and photos, etc., tucked into the book for safe keeping. It is indispensable to me! —Lory, contracts & royalties

Since legions of locals have been climbing aboard the SF Giants postseason bandwagon, I've been recommending to those I know who aren't usually into the sport that they brush up on baseball with our What Do You Know About Baseball? Knowledge Cards Quiz Deck (K268). —Matthew, editorial

I like to give the AstroReader: Wheel of Astrology (AA289). I give it to teenagers who then get their chart off the Internet and start learning about astrology, and I give it to all my wise men and women friends who already know about astrology and use it in their studies. —Gina, design

Our PoolCat by B. Kliban Jigsaw Puzzle (JK001) is great for cat lovers and puzzle enthusiasts. I just completed this puzzle, and it was so much fun! —Kristen, customer service

I love Pomegranate’s bookplates, like the Dard Hunter Bookplate (BP104). I am a book lover and I like to keep favorites on my shelf to lend out to friends. I love the old style—deckle edge paper, letterpress text—which is hard to find now. Even though Pom's bookplates are not strictly old style, they have the feel of that bygone era when a book was a personal treasure. —Patrice, design

My friends just bought a home, and I gave them the Frank Lloyd Wright Guest Book (AA269) as a housewarming gift. They keep it in their guest room for their out-of-town guests to write a little note after their stay. I’m sure it will be fun to read through after many years and remember all those good times! —Stephanie, production

Inuit Art from Cape Dorset Coloring Book (CB101). I have given this and our other coloring books as birthday gifts for toddlers. The parents love them and can hardly wait till the 1 year olds start coloring. In fact, some parents haven’t waited and started coloring them themselves! I usually give 2 per toddler (an easier 1 and a more detailed 1). —Ellen, customer service

Gray Wolves Sierra Club Boxed Notecards (SC1045). The portraits of these gray wolves are intimate and majestic. The little wolf pup howling in a field of flowers would melt anyone's heart. What a gift! —Susan, production

I’m currently enjoying our puzzles, like the ECOlogical Seasons Jigsaw Puzzle (AA629). I think they are fun and challenging to put together and great to do with family and friends. Much better than plopping down to watch TV! —Karma, customer service

Three Classic Children's Stories by Edward Gorey and James Donnelly (A188). I love this little book! James Donnelly’s retelling of the tales is brilliant and so well paired with Gorey's drawings. —Pat, editorial

M. C. Escher: Symmetry Coloring Book (CB125). I had a lot of fun working on the patterns for this product. —Marshall, design

Van Gogh: Sunflowers Boxed Notecards (0653). I love the images in this boxed note selection. They are perfect images to use for the fall! I mail cards out often to my family and friends, and they love getting them in the mail! —Helena, customer service

Just this week I completed the Van Gogh: Irises Jigsaw Puzzle (AA331), which I chose because I love both Van Gogh’s art and beautiful flowers. Our puzzles are very challenging, but satisfying to work on, because they are so beautifully constructed. It’s a great way to spend an evening or a lazy afternoon. —Judy, editorial

I really like the Eyvind Earle publications, like the Costal Landscapes Notecard Folio (0898), as they remind me of the beautiful and varied landscapes of the Bay Area. —Pamela, customer service

Charley Harper Boxed Gift Enclosures (AA636). Because the colors are retro-tastic, and because having these little notecards around makes a last-minute gift that much sweeter! —Stephanie, design
